SmartCaps are a premium product made by Follmann out of common raw materials. Microencapsulation is a cutting edge technology based on a simple plan implemented with the highest level of experience and chemical know-how.

Microencapsulation is a process providing a wide range of added value in technology. The conventional method is to encapsulate liquid substances to generate a solid product for further processing, subsequently allowing for safe transport and resource-efficient application. SmartCaps make everyday life easier within the industry and for consumers.

Details regarding the manufacturing process of SmartCaps
SmartCaps are active substances encased in a capsule. The nature of this shell determines the conditions under which it should break open and release the substance. This allows to control the onset of its effect with precision: For full effect. Just when you need it.

In theory, almost all substances can be encapsulated. In practice, Follmann checks individually whether your requirements regarding the onset of the effect can be met with the use of SmartCaps. If this is the case, Follmann will develop your individual SmartCaps for you based on your substances.

There is no general answer to this question. Their nature differs depending on the required performance of the capsules and the conditions under which they are supposed to release their content. Aspects of sustainability also play a major role at Follmann.
At the end of the day, that is up to you. The most typical scenario is certainly the need-based release of active substances. Furthermore, microencapsulation can prevent two substances from reacting with each other. Or they are protected from environmental influences. By using SmartCaps, liquid products can be turned into solid products to allow for easy and safe handling. Broadly speaking, microencapsulation is often about enhancing functionality, performance, safety or sustainability.
Besides the chemical industry, this certainly includes, the agricultural, household and personal care, printing, construction, and the textile industry.

Release on demand

We customise the SmartCaps, which release the active ingredient exactly when needed, based on your substance and intended application. The capsules are then optimised directly for a specific trigger. This is the case, for example, for fragrance samples and self-repairing coatings.

Separation of reactive
components

If the onset of the effect should be at a specified time, the reaction of components, which would react with one another, must of course be suppressed until then. The encapsulation of the substances achieves just that. This is used, for example, with screw locks or carbon-less copy paper.

Improved
handling

There is great potential in the encapsulation of liquids, as it gives them the properties of a solid. They suddenly become leak-proof and easy to transport. These properties are exploited, for example, in so-called thermochromic dyes or in latent heat storage systems. Furthermore, the microencapsulation of toxic substances allows for safe handling by the user.

Protection against
environmental influences

It goes without saying that SmartCaps also have a protective function. By means of microencapsulation, volatile substances or those with a limited shelf life can be protected from external influences, e.g. from the oxygen in the air, and thus the shelf life can be extended. This effect is used, for example, for the preservation of vitamins or fragrances.

Screws with coloured coatings may be an indication that they are covered with encapsulated adhesive and hardener. The friction generated when tightening the screw breaks open the capsules and the adhesive starts to harden. It now ensures additional adhesion of the screw. Perfect timing at your hands. Self-healing function
thanks to SmartCaps

Small cracks on surfaces are often the first sign of corrosion and potentially greater damage. Coatings containing smart encapsulated active substances, which will be released when such cracks develop, initiate a self-healing of the surface – for instance by means of cross-linking, minimal local liquefaction, or through the release of an anti-corrosion agent. This customised self-healing protects the surface in the long term. Or: Perfect timing at your hands. Just when you need it.

Visual effects at the touch
of a button

If metal particles are encapsulated in such a way that they remain mobile inside their capsule, their orientation can be controlled using an electric field. Such SmartCaps can be integrated in coatings. If voltage is applied, the orientation of the particles can be influenced in such a way that the optics are altered. As soon as the voltage is no longer applied, the orientation returns to the original condition. Or: Perfect timing at your hands. Just when you need it.

Remain cool, if it gets too hot
– and vice versa

A jacket which will keep you warm when it is cold and cool when it is hot: Sounds too good to be true? But it is possible. In fact, with the use of so-called PCMs (phase change materials, also referred to as latent heat storage systems). These are permanently encapsulated. If it is warm, they will turn into liquid inside the SmartCaps, store the heat and have a cooling effect at that moment. If it is cold, however, the PCMs become solid and release the stored heat to the body. Or: The timing can be precisely controlled. So the effect develops when it is needed.
